Sweat beaded on Liam's forehead as he walked the aisles, each chipped display case a monument to forgotten lives. The pawn shop air, thick with the scent of dust and desperation, seemed to press in on him. His fingers tapped a restless rhythm against his thigh. He hadn't slept properly in days, the image of the overdue bills burning in his mind. He was looking for a distraction, a brief respite from the financial firestorm that threatened to consume him.

He slowed, his gaze snagging on a glint of gold. The ring. It was nestled in the velvet cradle of a small box, the inscription barely visible under the harsh fluorescent light. He knew that swirl of diamonds anywhere. His grandmother's engagement ring. It was supposed to be a family heirloom, passed down through generations.

A tremor ran through him. He reached out, his hand unsteady as he pointed. "Can I see that one?" The words felt wrong, loud in the suffocating quiet.
